No baking in Prague this weekend..but eating in Brno instead. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. I love coming back to this charming city where I spent my university years.
Brno’s gastro scene has definitely improved over the last few years. It’s not just my personal view, there have been lots of articles written about it. The vast majority are in Czech, but this article in the New York Times could give you some basic feeling. Although it is mostly about bars, some cafes are covered as well.
If you plan a visit or just want to go into more detail, you can download this Brno gastro guide 2018, an overview of the most interesting players in Brno’s food and drinks scene.
My desserts experiences this weekend couldn’t have been more diverse, from a fine dining Italian-style restaurant to a cozy bistro:
BORGO AGNESE
Website: https://www.borgoagnese.cz/, available also in English.
Mediterranean-style restaurant, definitely one of the top restaurants in Brno. The food was very nice, easy to eat, not overcomplicated. As far as I can judge, the pasta I had tasted like a “real Italian south”.
The restaurant has quite a fancy feel, so I spent the first few minutes thinking about how much underdressed I was in my jeans and plain grey Uniqlo sweater. I generally prefer a bit more relaxed places.
But back to the food because the dessert I had was great. The menu says “Walnut dacquoise, plums, orange”. Which left me in the dark I have to admit. I took the risk and the reward was more than worth it. Dacquoise, as I understand now after some googling, can have more variations. Different types of nuts or creams can be used. The dacquoise I had in Borgo Agnese was a crunchy walnut meringue cake layered with mascarpone. Plums on top. Yum!
MyKitchen

Bistro MyKitchen was a completely different experience. The aim of this post is definitely not to directly compare these two places. It is simply not possible.
MyKitchen is a vegan bistro with fresh, healthy food, including cakes, mostly raw. The place has that low-key, relaxed vibe. I knew I had to visit it just based on a quick glance at it from a car window when we drove past on our way to a hotel. Although I have to admit I am not the biggest fan of raw desserts, the lower amount of sugar and overall healthy ingredients really let the poppy seeds and red berries in our cakes stand out.
I am already looking forward to my next Brno visit!
